Sicily is a beautiful island overflowing with historic sites and stunning scenery, it can be hard to decide just where to go first.

As the largest island in the Mediterranean you will need a few visits to get a good feel for the place.

The Val di Noto in the south-east, is famous for its baroque towns, Southern Sicily is home to the Greek Temples at Agrigento, the North East has the stunning backdrop of Mount Etna, while Northern Sicily is home to Palermo, famous for its street food and a plethora of historic gems, as well as Cefalù, one of Sicily’s best-known beach resorts.

Sicily is a melting pot of civilisations and much more than just the obvious highlights.

The food in Sicily is just bursting with some of the best Mediterranean flavours – it has all the classic Italian ingredients but with exotic twists coming from the various civilisations, which have occupied the island over the years. The ingredients are fresh and the vegetables are some of the tastiest you can find in Europe, thanks to the fertile soil and year-round sunshine.  As you would expect, juicy tomatoes, pistachios, oranges and lemon zest are used in a lot of recipes and give a really lovely flavour to pasta and fish dishes, unique to Sicily.

The classic Sicilian specialities such as arancini and cannoli are ever popular, but regional specialities are amazing!  Try pork spleen in a sandwich (pani ca meusa), pasta with fresh sardines, chickpea fritters (pane e panelle) or pasta with sea urchins.

Palermo has some amazing restaurants if you like to try hearty local food.
