Californian wine regions have vastly improved in recent years and are now competing well with European wines. Highly lauded and frequently awarded for the quality of production, California wine is definitely worth exploring.  The Wine producing regions are vast – for example the Central Coast region alone is a 300mile stretch from San Francisco to Santa Barbara which takes in views of the Santa Cruz Mountains and Monteray County.  The views are as much a draw as the wine!  Here you will find beautiful wines made from varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay as you would find in Burgundy.

In other regions you will find Zinfandel, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Cabernet Franc grapes, to name a few.

A good place to start a tour might be The Napa Valley – at just 30 miles long and 5 miles wide it offers stunning scenery and award winning wines.

It has some of the most diverse soils and unique microclimates which allows for cultivating a vast variety of grapes, and has over 400 wineries spread throughout the lush Valley.

Each Vineyard has its own unique style & history, and you may find it worthwhile visiting the smaller wineries where the opportunity may present itself to talk with the winemaker or owner.   And learn about the differences in the wines and vintages made on site.

After a day in the sunshine, you might like to take in the town of Calistoga with its medicinal waters, it is the home of numerous rejuvenating spas with all your favourite treatments.  Wine and relaxation – a match made in heaven.

To top off your holiday the quaint towns of Oakville, Yountville, and Rutherford are filled with art galleries and have a cool cultural feel with local artists selling their paintings and crafts.
