The Festival de Cannes, or Cannes Film Festival, is taking place from 23rd to 25th May 2019.

Seen as the most glamorous and leading film festival of the world, this year Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu has been nominated as the President of the Jury.

In the beginning the festival was seen as more of a tourist and social event rather than a competitive one. However with the years, the number of the films submitted has grown to make this the leading event of the film industry.

Today, more then 30,000 professionals from all over the world converge on the festival.  Dozens of actors, 1000 stage managers, 4000 distributors, 5000 producers and 4000 reporters, representing more than 1600 newspapers and TV stations from 75 countries are among the participants.

The most prestigious award given at Cannes is the Palme d’Or ("Golden Palm") for the best film.  But there are many different categories and prizes including the Prix du Jury and the Grand Prix - and even the Palm Dog - for the best performance by a pooch!

Last year in 2018 Cate Blanchett was President of the Jury and it was the Japanese film "Shoplifters", directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, which won the Palme d'Or.  This year nominations are still top secret at the time of writing, however reports have emerged that Tarantino’s latest film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will see its first screening at Cannes.  Set in 1969 the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a former western TV star and Brad Pitt as his stunt double.

It will be interesting to see the Tarantino twist to this film.  Cannes Film festival champions international films and film-makers, so watch out for everything from documentaries to horror, and social commentaries to family drama.
